New Wine Mission
The New Wine mission is to enrich the lives of the youth participants and audiences that attend,
through contemporary drama and music, with a focus on the teachings of Jesus Christ.
We strive to:
• Create a spiritual growth experience for youth that is fun, meaningful, and has positive
impact in their lives.
• Build a sense of Christian community within our youth that spans denomination.
• Contribute to a growing, caring, and fun high school peer group through shared activities
and growth experiences.
• Share God’s word through contemporary music and drama with audiences across North
America.

About New Wine
New Wine is an enthusiastic group of 46 talented youth
representing numerous congregations and denominations
in Cloquet and surrounding communities. Zion Lutheran
Church serves as New Wine's "home base." Each
Sunday evening beginning in January, New Wine gathers
to prepare and rehearse a different musical each year.
This year, we are celebrating our 20th anniversary by
performing “Kingdom Tales,” written and composed by
Rev. Todd Mattson, a former Zion pastor who formed
Zion’s New Wine group in 1989. “Kingdom Tales” is a
delightful contemporary retelling of Gospel parables,
through drama and music, complete with modern
examples of Samaritans and Pharisees as well as church
ladies preparing for the church potluck while extolling
the virtues of their yellow Jello and not-fish hot dish.
Thanks to all who made our 2009 season and 20th year a big success!!

Try-outs for the 2010 Edition of New Wine will be Sunday, December 6,
between 6:30-8:30 in the sanctuary at Zion. Our play this year will not only
have acting and song, but a much larger rhythm component than our plays in
the past. We will also be using images projected onto a screen, so a much
more involved technical crew will be needed to compile and organize those
materials. Not everyone will be on stage all the time, so if you would be
interested in being a part of the rhythm or tech crews, give that some thought
before tryouts, as those components in this particular play are of equal
importance to the acting and song. Also, at tryouts this year, everyone will
be asked to sing the same (very familiar) song, so no need to prepare an
individual solo. Everyone will also be asked to read, so plan to read very
expressively for us something which we will have for you. New Wine is
open to all High Schoolers grades 9-12. If you are interested in
participating, but cannot audition on the 6th, contact Cheryl Vopat at
384-3992 or by e-mail at cvopat@hughes.net before December 6th to
arrange an alternate audition time.
